The story of Ensiapumestari began in 2023 when I decided to start a company to offer high-quality first aid training. It wasn’t long before I acquired a business ID and handled the paperwork.
The spark for this venture came from observing that an increasing number of companies in Finland were offering first aid training without proper equipment or expertise. Finnish law does not regulate who can provide first aid training. Literally anyone can start a business in Finland and offer first aid courses, even if they themselves don't know how to perform first aid.
One person told me how, during a remote first aid course arranged by their employer, they had practiced chest compressions by pressing their own hands together and making a pumping motion.
Every professional in emergency care knows that practicing chest compressions requires high-quality, purpose-built equipment.
Working in pre-hospital- and emergency care, I have seen firsthand how crucial high-quality first aid is in emergencies. Quality first aid literally saves lives.
For instance, recognizing unconsciousness, calling emergency services, and starting CPR quickly are critical factors in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
Additionally, treatment recommendations change as new research becomes available. Therefore, it is important to attend a first aid course regularly, at least every three years. For example, we now know that disinfectants should not routinely be used for wound cleaning and that viper bite victims should not take antivenom tablets unless specifically advised.
Because I wanted Ensiapumestari’s training sessions to use high-quality educational materials, I purchased, among other things, Laerdal’s adult, child, and infant CPR mannequins, Epipen training devices, Cederroth first aid bandages, and the Act Fast Anti-Choking Trainer vest for practicing the Heimlich maneuver.
High-quality teaching tools are an essential part of the training, as they help make the first aid course as effective as possible.
In this regard, I might be a bit of a poor businessman and advertiser. When discussing my company and its activities with others, I’ve said that it’s perfectly fine if someone doesn’t choose to book first aid training through my company. As long as the first aid training, whether through my company or another, is conducted by someone who is a professional in acute or emergency care. First aid training should definitely not be ordered just anywhere.
